維持是maintain還是retain? 傻傻分不清楚

不管是在雅思還是多益，maintain和retain都是很常見的題型
究竟這兩個中文翻譯都是「維持、保持」的英文，到底有何區別？

首先，maintain 是最常見的。但它不適用於各種情境。

我們先看以下的例句：
1. In order to maintain his position, Peter works harder than any other candidate.
2. They have an obligation to maintain order.
3. We aim to maintain high standards of customer care.

大家有發現嗎？maintain 維持的東西幾乎都是外在而且自己無法掌握的。像是維持地位、維持秩序、維持標準。

那麼 retain 呢？
我們一樣用例句來看
1. Lillian tries to retain her dignity throughout the performance.
2. Art lessons might help retain children’s creativity.
3. I always try to retain my sanity while making decisions, but I hardly succeed.

從這三句大家有找出共同點嗎？
就是 …
retain 後方加的，通常都是與內在有關，比較像是與生俱來的東西，例如尊嚴、創造力、理智。
